The United Nations launched a peacekeeping operation,\u00a0<strong>United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC)<\/strong>, to stabilise the situation, protect civilians, and support the government. The position was held by Katangese gendarmes who were resisting UN operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a mixed group of roughly\u00a0<strong>16 soldiers<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong>3-inch mortar detachment<\/strong>, Captain Salaria advanced toward the obstacle. As the unit approached, enemy fire intensified, and two armoured cars joined the opposition, creating a heavily defended position far stronger than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the odds, and fully aware of the casualty risk, Captain Salaria chose to engage the enemy directly. He led a&nbsp;<strong>close-quarters assault<\/strong>, throwing grenades, engaging with khukri and bayonet, and directing small arms fire. During the fierce action, he personally destroyed both armoured cars and inflicted heavy casualties among the gendarmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the process, he was&nbsp;<strong>severely wounded by automatic fire<\/strong>.
